Luis Alberto Camargo

Luis is an experienced wilderness guide and founder of the Organization for Environmental Education and Protection. He believes nature is essential for children’s development – not just a backdrop but the most important learning environment. Drawing on Richard Louv’s research, he highlights the negative effects of ‘nature deficit disorder’ on children’s wellbeing. Nature can be brought into the classroom, he says, such as in soundscapes, imagery, and small gardens. Luis believes that engaging the body, mind, and emotions can foster compassion, empathy, and a deeper connection with the natural world.

“Being in nature allows us to understand that we are nature. And if we understand we are nature, then we might even act as such. And that would be… one of the most important ideas to bring into the table.”
