Learning variability

Childhood is full of variability – within individuals, within groups, and across contexts. How can learning environments embrace these differences and changes?

Education often provides one-size-fits-all instruction aimed at the average student. But children and their environments differ in many ways.

Learning variability within individuals

Individual children can behave differently on different days, and even throughout the course of a single day their behaviour, emotions, motivation, and skill levels can fluctuate. They will also change in many ways as they grow older. Why do these changes happen? Is it possible for learning materials and technologies to take these changes into account?

Learning variability within groups

Children in a group differ from each other. Everyone has their own unique combination of characteristics, strengths, and challenges. How can educators and caregivers make sure that all children are given the best opportunities to learn and develop in a group setting?

Learning variability across contexts

Not all environments are the same. Children encounter different types of environment that may help or hinder their learning and development. How can children be prepared to adapt to and thrive in any new context they find themselves in?

We address these big questions in our Learning Variability hub. Find articles looking at the latest science behind adaptive technology, personalised learning, neurodiversity, and much more. A one-size-fits-all approach can never support all children to reach their potential. Let’s embrace learning variability.
