Julia Leonard works with teachers and school administrators studying the conditions that allow children to thrive at school. She conducts controlled experiments observing children closely. She pays attention to how learning might be different from one child to another and also how the learning of each child changes constantly as they adapt to different contexts and circumstances. Julia’s study on motivation highlighted that basic factors such as sleep, mood, and diet influence children’s ability to learn. However, different children have different sensibilities to how these factors affect their learning.

“The learning contexts around children are not static. They change all the time and affect learners and the whole learning ecosystem.”

Julia Leonard (PhD) is Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at Yale University and the Principal Investigator of the Leonard Learning Lab. Julia wants to understand the factors that support both children’s approach to learning and their capacity to learn. Her ultimate goal is to build theories of learning and motivation that can be applied to improving children’s academic and life outcomes.
