Data about learning processes can identify moments when learners need help

While technology can tailor content to learners, an alternative role for AI is to empower people to learn and teach more effectively

AI can support the teacher to monitor students who are struggling to meet their goals, and even support educators with activities like teacher coaching and writing feedback to students. 

We have had the kind of tendency in education that we measure how much students learn, not how they learn. We have something new in our hands in teaching, learning and education because we have data.

We have data about, for example, learning processes and we can use this data with AI so that we can predict something what goes wrong, we can predict what comes next. And then we can also try to identify those critical moments where we can provide help.

So we are not taking learners to be connected with AI forever, but how we train, how we teach, how we educate them to be strong learners in this changing world: There is a role for AI to help.

Sanna Järvelä is a professor of learning sciences and educational technology and leads the Learning and Educational Technology Research Unit (LET) at the University of Oulu, Finland. Järvelä and her team are exploring regulation in collaborative groups that are using multimodal methods and examining how intelligent technologies can be used to understand and support learning. Järvelä is co-PI of CELLA (the Center for Learning and Living with AI), which is funded by the Jacobs Foundation.
