Akina is a school librarian in Hong Kong who connects literature with other disciplines like mathematics and science. She believes blending storytelling with math makes learning more engaging and accessible, especially in secondary school. During events like Math Week, Akina shares fiction books that incorporate mathematical concepts, like The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and Alice in Wonderland. In primary schools, she uses picture books that subtly introduce math ideas, supporting cross-curricular learning and helping students appreciate the connections between subjects through stories.

Akina Lam is an experienced educator with over 10 years in International Baccalaureate (IB) schools, currently Head of the Library at Discovery College, in Hong Kong. Passionate about children’s literature, Akina holds a Master of Education in Critical Approaches to Children’s Literature from the University of Cambridge and is a committee member of the Hong Kong Dragon Book Awards. With a focus on creating engaging and inclusive learning environments, Akina aims to inspire young minds through diverse literary experiences. Dedicated to professional growth, she continually seeks innovative ways to enhance the library’s resources and support the educational community.
