Teaching children the cultural context of language
Kayleigh teaches Spanish as a second language by immersing her students in both the language and its rich cultural context. She creates a learning environment where differences are celebrated, helping students appreciate the contrasts between their own culture and the Spanish-speaking world. By giving her students a voice in the classroom, she builds their confidence and encourages respectful dialogue. Kayleigh finds that small gestures, like a high five, can boost a student’s self-esteem and willingness to participate. She also uses praise carefully to reduce the fear of mistakes, fostering a positive and supportive atmosphere for language learning.

“In my classroom, my students are constantly speaking, they have avenues to share their opinions. We’ve created a space where they feel okay to share. We’ve also created an environment where our ideas and opinions, although different, are respected.”
