Improving children's language through storytelling

Daniela uses Italian storytelling to help Italian-origin children in Luxembourg maintain their heritage language while easing their learning of local languages. She felt joy and connection as the children who initially mixed Italian with Luxembourgish or French gradually became more confident and engaged. Daniela’s most treasured memory is when, after a year of storytelling, the children narrated a story to her in her style. The children’s language improved, with even the shyest becoming active participants.

Daniela Trucco is co-founder of the multilingual reading organisation based in Luxembourg called Il Etait Une Fois. She ran reading workshops in Italian in kindergartens and in the library of Il Etait Une Fois in the city of Luxembourg. She has worked for years promoting the joy of reading with families, schools and libraries, and reading stories out loud in the children’s family language.
