Mike Wamaya

Mike uses dance to empower and unify his community in Kibera, Kenya. His inclusive dance school welcomes children of all abilities, providing a platform for self-expression. Mike prioritizes community and personal growth over the appearance of the performances. A pivotal moment in his work was the school’s first show, “Voices of Kibera”, which halted potential violence in the neighborhood. The sight of children in tutus brought the community together. Dance had the power to create positive change, transforming and uplifting Mike’s community.

Mike Wamaya teaches ballet in Kenya’s Kibera and Mathare slums for Project Elimu, which he founded. As a dance instructor, he combines the teaching of dance with social skills. Within Project Elimu he explores human potential and creativity in a broad sense. This approach has brought his students confidence and self-esteem. Attending the classes has also turned around dropout rates and teenage pregnancy rates for his students. Mike’s programme also provides scholarships to help his students finish their studies.
