Elisabetta Aurino

Elisabetta is an economist who researches learning, health, and development. In a recent project, she studied how caregivers – not just parents, but grandparents or other relatives – support adolescent learning in Ghana. Many see their role as ensuring children are fed and get to school. Some caregivers feel unsure or ashamed when engaging with teachers, because they don’t know how to support the adolescent’s learning. She suggests that teachers provide practical tips for caregivers, about setting routines for bedtime and going to school, balancing chores and homework, and talking about future goals.

“We know from the evidence that parents still remain the main factor driving the children’s learning and development, especially in the early adolescent years.”
