Alexander Grob, professor for personality and developmental psychology at the University of Basel, Switzerland, has found in his research that high-quality child care and parenting skills have a significant effect on the success of immigrant children in learning a second language. If a society is to provide equal opportunities for all, it needs to ensure that these children are able to grow up in an environment in which they can become fluent in the host country’s language and develop to their full potential.
