Owen Henkel

AI Researcher, University of Oxford

Owen Henkel is currently researcher at the University of Oxford, where his research focuses on applying advanced NLP methods to aid both the teaching and formative assessment of foundational literacy and numeracy skills. He also works closely with Rising Academies, where he leads their work on building, Rori an AI-powered chatbot that provides personalized math tutoring, on low-cost mobile phones.

Before Oxford, he founded and worked as Investment Director at Pearson Ventures, a 50M early-stage investment fund, where he led new investments and served as a board member on multiple portfolio companies. Previously, Owen was Director of Research and Efficacy, at Pearson Affordable Learning Fund, which invested in education entrepreneurs operating in Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and Latin America.

Earlier in his career, he was a consultant at McKinsey and Co., completed a dual MBA/MA at the University of Michigan, and taught in New Orleans as part of Teach for America.
