Toyin Awofeso

Toyin Awofeso

Toyin is a Montessori teacher in Kigali, Rwanda, currently working with upper elementary students for the first time. She takes a flexible, student-centered approach, viewing herself as a guide who adapts to her students’ needs each day. Toyin believes deep learning happens when students have autonomy, trust, and space to explore. She creates collaborative tasks with clear guidelines that let students lead, sometimes making them co-teachers. Her students research, work together, and present their findings with surprising skill, often using PowerPoint in subjects like social studies. When confusion arises, Toyin reflects on the learning environment rather than blaming the student. She builds trust and is firm, friendly, and flexible. For Toyin, joy and connection are just as important as structure in helping students thrive.

Listen to Toyin

“Teaching is a journey, not a destination. So we have to be patient with ourselves. We have to be patient with our students.”
