Digital learning in a refugee camp
Koen developed digital education in the Kakuma refugee camp, the second largest refugee camp in Africa. Initially, he faced significant challenges, including inadequate facilities and limited resources. Over time, Koen set up basic infrastructure of laptops and internet access, enabling refugees to use educational technology and take coding classes. He adapted to ongoing connectivity issues using solar-powered devices and offline resources. The project also facilitated intercultural exchanges, enriching both Kakuma’s students and those from other countries. Koen shows how creativity and resilience can advance education in challenging environments.

“We noticed that the refugees started to talk about their own lives to students in other countries, and there was a real strong mutual appreciation after those goals. And we noticed that they got a very fair perspective about being a refugee.”
