Building self-esteem in disadvantaged students
Manu supports students aged 9-11 from disadvantaged backgrounds at REP (priority education network) schools in France. His students face significant barriers, including limited exposure to the French language and written culture. Manu, who shares a similar background, uses innovative teaching methods to engage his students. He focuses on making learning relevant and building self-esteem. A standout project involved teaching students to play unfamiliar musical instruments and read sheet music, leading to a transformative concert experience. Notably, this project improved the academic performance and self-confidence of a previously struggling student.

“A child needs to make sense of what he’s doing. Why he writes, why he reads, what is the meaning of all that? The child needs to know why we ask him those things, because he needs to own his learning process.”
